Codonopsis Pilosula, commonly known as Dang Shen, is a perennial flowering plant, that climbs up to 1.7m, native to Northeast Asia and Korea. Its root is widely used as an ingredient in Chinese herbal soups and beverages. A gentle tonic that can increase energy levels and help the body increase its endurance towards stress, Codonopsis is sometimes used as a substitute to Ginseng to help boost the immune system, though its effects are relatively milder and less long-lasting. Research has shown that it can help increase haemoglobin and red blood cell levels, while lowering the blood pressure.
