Motherhood is a journey of transformation, marked by both immense joy and profound challenges. It's a path filled with sleepless nights, endless worrying, and self-doubt, yet interlaced with moments of tenderness, laughter, and pride.
  • From the moment of conception, a woman’s body undergoes numerous changes to nurture new life. While physical effects like weight gain and heartburn are widely acknowledged, we often overlook pregnancy’s impact on the psyche. For example, pregnancy rewires mothers’ neural networks around empathy, promoting bonding with their child.
  • However, many pregnant women also experience lasting
  • “brain fog”, potentially due to changes in neural pathways. The unpredictability of hormonal changes may manifest as mood swings and unexplainable changes in emotions.
  • It's no surprise, then, that pregnancy and recovery from childbirth take a significant toll on maternal mental health.
  • But what's more startling is just how prevalent this issue is: 1 in 5 mothers around the world develop perinatal or postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. In fact, up to 70% of mothers suffer “mum guilt” in silence, often neglecting their own needs while striving to meet an unattainable “perfect mum” standard.
  • We must recognise that it is perfectly acceptable for mothers to prioritise their mental health and seek support when needed. You matter, and your mental well-being is of utmost importance.
  • Taking time out or asking for help is not a sign of weakness or failure as a mother. On the contrary, seeking support or just a quiet moment of peace with a cup of tea is one way to refill your tank so you can better care for those you love.

The month of May is known as Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month. As we celebrate the strength and resilience of mothers and maternal figures in our lives, let's remember one crucial truth: you are enough, just as you are. You have given your families a priceless gift by simply being there, loving unconditionally, and weathering life's storms with unwavering determination.
We value and cherish you for all that you are and all that you do. So, take this day to recognise your worth and care for yourself!
